The stars in the night sky above Europe were blotted out, and the unilluminated side of the moon facing Earth started to flicker, like a lightbulb that was at the end of its lifespan.

The flickering stopped. The moon was now shining on its own. Its silver light illuminated the dark night.

The humming had turned into an unbearable screeching, as the moon hung impossibly close and large in the sky. Witnesses would later say that they saw people explode into blue sparks at the peak of the noise.
